Pylon Signs

A pylon or totem sign stands on its own at an entrance or road frontage, telling drivers what is on the property before they turn in. It may carry one brand or a stack of tenant panels. Because pylons are freestanding structures near roads, they need careful planning for foundations, wind loading, visibility and approvals. We quote pylons as a full project from survey to panels.

Typical signs in this category

  • Business park entrance totems
  • Multi-tenant directory pylons
  • Fuel station and dealership road-frontage pylons
  • Illuminated lightbox pylons
  • Slim monolith totems for office buildings
  • Replacement tenant panels for existing pylons
  • Wayfinding totems inside large sites

Materials

Steel structure with claddingThe internal frame and foundation connection that carries wind loads
Aluminium composite claddingWeather-resistant, flat outer skin that holds printed or vinyl graphics
Chromadek-style coated steelDurable panels for simpler unlit pylons
Acrylic or flex face lightboxesLit tenant panels that remain readable at night
Reflective or cast vinylTenant names and logos that stay legible in headlights and sun

Choosing a size

Pylon height and panel size depend on road speed, setbacks and what the local rules allow. Drivers need to read a tenant name in a few seconds, so fewer, larger panels usually work better than many small ones. Structural design must account for the panel area exposed to wind. We advise on proportions after the site survey and before any engineering detail.

Standards and compliance

Freestanding pylons commonly require municipal approval for outdoor advertising and may also need building plan approval and engineering input for the foundation and structure. Landlord or property-owner consent is also needed. These approvals are the customer's or landlord's responsibility; we can advise on what is typically needed and can assist with drawings for submission. Lit pylons must be connected by qualified people and comply with applicable electrical requirements.

Same-day conditions

  • Pylon structures are engineered and installed projects and are never a same-day product; the programme is confirmed on the quote
  • Replacement printed vinyl for an existing tenant panel can sometimes be prepared urgently if measurements and artwork are confirmed
  • A temporary correx board or PVC banner at the entrance can sometimes be produced quickly while the pylon is planned
  • Urgent items depend on stock, capacity, approved artwork and full payment before the configured cutoff

FAQs

Do I need approval for a pylon sign?
Very often, yes. Outdoor advertising rules and building approvals commonly apply to freestanding signs. The customer or landlord is responsible for obtaining these, and we can advise on the usual requirements.
Can you update one tenant on an existing pylon?
Usually. We measure the panel, produce new graphics and replace or overlay the face, depending on the pylon's construction.
Should a pylon be illuminated?
If customers arrive after dark or the frontage faces a busy road, lighting greatly helps. It adds electrical work and approval considerations, which we explain at quote stage.
How tall should my pylon be?
That depends on road speed, sight lines and local limits. We give a recommendation after the survey rather than guess.
